Based in southwest Scotland I have been a freelance travel writer and photographer for nearly two decades. Building up a strong market for my writing and pictures based on Northern England, Scotland (including its islands) and Ireland. I now run my own journalism business from my home in Dumfriesshire, in southwest Scotland. Though the bulk of my workload is still feature articles illustrated with my own digital photography. I am also a successful author in my own right.

I have also collaborated with others on several books and supplied photography to many publications. Internet writing has become an increasing part of my workload and I see it becoming even more so. I am an active member of several professional organizations including the Outdoor Writers and Photographers Guild. Some of my specialist areas are: heritage, history, folklore, cycling, angling, caravanning, camping, wildlife, folk music and song, wild shorelines and islands, people and place profiles, landscape, countryside, and wildlife photography.

I have a regular walks page in a Scottish newspaper and I have been involved since its inception with moniaive.org.uk. I still contribute to that website as time allows. I am a keen outdoorsman who is happy fishing at the riverbank, watching and photographing Britain's fantastic wildlife and exploring our wonderful wilderness areas, out of the ordinary places and meeting the interesting folk who stay in these places. I am also an award winning folk singer and renowned songwriter mainly in the Scottish idiom. I regularly participate and perform at folk music events and festivals in Scotland, northern England and Ireland.
